Controlled-release urea increased maize yield and nitrogen use efficiency and reduced nitrogen rate

Two-year field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of controlled-release urea (CRU) on maize yield and nitrogen use efficiency under rainfed and plastic mulching conditions in Yunnan province. Results indicated that application of CRU not only increased maize yield by 4.7%-15.6% but also improved nitrogen use efficiency by 5.3%-17.4% compared to the regular urea. The optimal rates of CRU for high yield maize production in the experimental area turned out to be 75% of regular urea rate applied.
